Objective: Developmental dysplasia of the hip and idiopathic pes equinovarus are common pediatric orthopedic conditions. An association between the 2 conditions has been postulated. This presumptive association is supported by the theory that both conditions could be a result of intra-uterine compression. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of developmental dysplasia of the hip in children with idiopathic pes equinovarus.

Methods: In this retrospective study, a total of 115 patients with idiopathic pes equinovarus treated in our clinic between January 2012 and January 2021 were evaluated. Demographic data, patient’s history, and hip ultrasonography of patients were obtained from medical files. All ultrasound assessments were performed by an experienced pediatric orthopedist. The degree of dysplasia was classified according to Graf.

Results: Between May 2012 and December 2021, 115 cases of idiopathic idiopathic pes equinovarus were screened developmental dysplasia of the hip. There were 80 boys and 35 girls. The mean Pirani score was 5.02 (3 to 6). A total of 6 patients were identified with type IIB hips. The 6 affected cases from the study group of 115 suggests that the frequency of developmental dysplasia of the hip requiring treatment in babies with idiopathic pes equinovarus is 5.2%.

Conclusions: The prevalence of developmental dysplasia of the hip in idiopathic pes equinovarus is similar to the normal population. Therefore, routine developmental dysplasia of the hip screening is enough in patients with pes equinovarus as the normal population.
