Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the protective effect of nettle seed (Urtica dioica L. seed) extract (UDSE) in the kidney tissue of rats exposed to ionising radiation.

Material and Method: Thirty-two albino rats were divided into four groups: control group rats were fed a standard feed for 10 days, radiation group mice received a single 5-gray irradiation dose and were fed a standard feed for 10 days, radiation+UDSE group rats received a single 5-gray irradiation dose and were fed a standard feed with 30 mL/kg UDSE for 10 days, and UDSE group rats were fed a standard feed with 30 mL/kg UDSE for 10 days. Renal levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were measured.

Results: While MDA and Cu levels were higher in the irradiation group than in the other groups, Zn and SOD levels were lower (p<0.001). In addition, while Cu and MDA levels were lower in the UDSE group than in other groups, SOD and Zn levels were higher (p<0.001).

Conclusion: Increased lipid peroxidation and Cu levels resulting from radiotherapy can be reduced by using UDSE. In addition, UDSE can increase the decreasing levels of SOD and Zn after radiotherapy.
