Objective: Gastrointestinal system endoscopy has remarkably improved since its introduction. It is among the most reliable tools used by clinicians for diagnosis and treatment because it provided opportunities for direct observation and intervention. Endoscopic procedures coupled with sedation allow patients to relax and endoscopists to make a comprehensive evaluation. We evaluated the data of gastrointestinal endoscopies performed under anesthesia at the local state hospital, including the evaluation of anesthetic techniques used during the procedure.

Material and Method: Patients who underwent gastroscopy and colonoscopy at our hospital between January 1 and October 30, 2019 were evaluated by an anesthesiologist. These patients included those with an American Society of Anesthesiologists score of I–II, a Mallampati score of I, II, or III, and those who were predicted to not have difficult airway. After the procedure, patients were monitored for 15-40 min until they achieved a modified Aldrete score of 9-10, and then discharged. The endoscopy records were retrospectively scanned and the data were evaluated.

Results: A total of 124 patients with an average age of 42.2 years underwent gastroscopy alone, and 12 patients with an average age of 52.5 years underwent colonoscopy alone. Thirty- four patients with an average age of 44.3 years underwent both gastroscopy and colonoscopy. The age of the patients was in the range of 18–88 years. Of the total 204 endoscopies, no patient developed endoscopy- or anesthesia-related complications after the procedure.

Conclusion: Endoscopic procedures under anesthesia can be safely performed in both large and peripheral hospitals.
